Annual Reading Event at Brocks Hill Primary School Celebrates the Joy of Reading

To celebrate our commitment to nurturing young readers, we recently hosted our annual reading event, inviting parents from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Year 6. The event aimed to showcase how staff at the school strengthen children’s reading skills; from phonics and fostering reading fluency in Key Stage 1 (KS1), to developing fluency and comprehension skills in Ket Stage 2 (KS2).

This gathering of parents and teachers provided an invaluable insight into the pivotal role reading plays in not only a child’s academic success, but also their wellbeing. The statistics presented during the event highlighted the impact of reading on children’s lives, giving attendees much to ponder.

One of the highlights of the event was the presence of a special guest; renowned local author, Steve Skidmore. Mr. Skidmore provided a toolbox of techniques to support parents when it comes to encouraging children to read. He emphasised the importance of reading, especially at a younger age, and shared tips and tricks that transform reading into an exciting and fulfilling activity, thus making the experience enjoyable and heightening children’s interest.

Later, he signed copies of his books and was even interviewed for a vlog by one of our enthusiastic students; this certainly added a layer of excitement to the day.

These engaging and fun sessions left a lasting impression on all attendees, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a love for reading and promoting literacy skills.
